Homeopathy works – not acceptable to British Researchers

I believe British researchers and pharmaceutical lobby have made their mindset not to accept the efficacy of homeopathic medicines in particular and finally not accepting homeopathy system of therapeutics. In the first week of this month, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has said “Homeopathic products are ‘clearly not’ medicines and should carry labels warning that there is ‘no scientific evidence for homeopathy’ “.

Responding to draft guidance on the advertising of homeopathic medicines published by the MHRA this week, the society expressed concerns that the public does not understand the principles on which homeopathy is based, and said there was ‘general confusion’ about the difference between homeopathic and herbal products.

On 13th Nov. RHEUMATOLOGY – a UK based journal published that “Homeopathy has clinical benefits in rheumatoid arthritis patients that are attributable to the consultation process but not the homeopathic remedy”.

Sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis who visited a homeopathic doctor experienced significant reductions in pain, inflammation and other key markers of the disease, the research shows. Yet it made no difference whether the solution they received was a genuine homeopathic tincture prescribed to treat rheumatism, or a placebo.

Researchers are from the School of Medicine, Primary Medical Care, Aldermoor Health Centre, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK, and Center for Managing Chronic Disease, School of Public Health, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA and School of Mathematics, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton, UK.

Their main objective was to assess whether any benefits from adjunctive homeopathic intervention in patients with RA are due to the homeopathic consultation, homeopathic remedies or both.

Exploratory double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial conducted from January 2008 to July 2008, in patients with active stable RA receiving conventional therapy. Eighty-three participants from three secondary care UK outpatient clinics were randomized to 24 weeks of treatment with either homeopathic consultation (further randomized to individualized homeopathy, complex homeopathy or placebo) or non-homeopathic consultation (further randomized to complex homeopathy or placebo).

Patients were randomized into five groups. Of the five groups, three received a homeopathic consultation (Groups 1 – 3) and two (Groups 4 and 5) did not. The consultation groups were further randomized to individualized treatment (Group 1), a homeopathic complex for RA (Group 2) or placebo (Group 3).

Non-consultation participants were allocated complex (Group 4) or placebo (Group 5); individualized homeopathy can only be prescribed through a consultation.

This study has not disclosed the homeopathic remedies given to Group 1 patients.

Researchers commented “Homeopathic intervention in patients with chronic, active but relatively stable RA has significant clinical benefits that are attributable mainly to the homeopathic consultation process. There appeared to be no specific benefit from the homeopathic remedies themselves”.

Researchers acknowledged the participant homeopaths, June Daniels and Hugh Harrison, and Francis Treuherz, homeopath for help with technical homeopathic queries.

Researchers concluded that homeopathic consultations but not homeopathic remedies are associated with clinically relevant benefits for patients with active but relatively stable RA.

This work was supported by the National Institute of Health Research, the Samueli Institute, USA, the Southampton Complementary Medicine Research Trust and National Health Service Fund for Science.

In the last Researchers mentioned “Disclosure statement: The authors have declared no conflicts of interest.”

This study clearly shows that individualized homeopathic treatment works, but such outcome is not accepted to these researchers.

Recently, we witnessed an International Homeopathic event in India organized by AHML (Asian Homoeopathic Medical League). We were happy sharing our results & success stories amongst ourselves that homeopathy works and we have evidences, but we could not founded any statement for such derogatory agencies.

I raised this question in one of the scientific session whether we are going to release any guideline or policy for homeopathic clinical trials/research which must be accepted universally. In spite of large gathering of senior homeopaths from many countries, government agencies and private parishioners, we could not release any guideline which might have curbed such reports.

I would appeal here that we need to have some mechanism from Indian govt. agencies like CCRH, CCH, HPL and others to establish the scientificity of homeopathic medicines and homeopathy and that to be accepted worldwide.

  1. Dear Dr Singhal,
You are right in saying that some standardized policy in respect to scientificity of homeopathic medicines need to be formulated. Differences in
evaluating and prescribing techniques should also be looked into seriosly so that a fresher in this system does not get confused.
But saying that it is the consultation process that gives relief is absurd certainly.People involed in these studies of RA etc. should come out with the evidences and facts to prove it otherwise.

    • Dear Dr. Gupta you are right. This is the half truth of the homeopathy they concluded. Case taking is an important step in homeopathy like in other streams. This is good that they appreciated the way a homeopath communicate with his patient. The most important point here they are misleading the public about homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic medicines selected on the bases of patient’s symptom is only way to give relief to the illness. Actually this is the homeopathic medicine which gives relief. In cases of babies, uneducated patients, old patients, bed-ridden and crtical patients, this is the homeopathic medicine works not the consultation with the patient.

  4. Dear friends and colleagues

My humble submission is to create vaccum then acceptance of homeopathy will increase.
everyone is talking about ENVIRONMENT AND HOMOEPATHY IS HUNDRED PERCENT ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY. Biodiversity is major issue related to environment and for preparing medicines , almost 30% loss of biodiversity is due to pharmaceuticals working for allopathic drug industry.
BIO MEDICAL WASTE , HEALTHCARE WASTE IS generated in huge quantities which is not properly disposed or treated causing another health problem so
in homeopathy , if we phase out mercury thermometer and manometer , it is hundred percent safe and no BIOMEDICAL WASTE IS generated clinically.
MAJOR CHALLENGES ARE IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH HAZARDS which are the best dealt with homeopathy and minimum dosages are requiring less n less medication for treating a sick individual and lesser admission to hospital, less surgeries and less manpower loss in general . if anyone is hospitalised , all concerned are occupied due to one person’s health.

    SO
ATTACK IS THE BEST DEFENCE , WE SHOULD RAISE ISSUES WHICH ARE FRIENDLY TO HOMOEOPATHY AND ALLOPATHY HAS NO ALTERNATIVE AS YET.

LASTLY , IF WE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF HEALTH CARE IN THE REMOTEST AREAS IN INDIA , WE REQUIRE ONE OR TWO EDUCATED PERSON WITH COMMUNICATION SETUP LIKE COMPUTER WITH INTERNET AS IN GYAN DOOT SEVA IN RURAL AREAS, AND A NETWORK OR CALL CENTRE OF HOMEOPATHIC DOCTORS FOR PROVIDING HEALTH CONSULTATION IN LOCAL LANGUAGE TO THE REMOTEST AREAS THROUGH VIDEO CHAT OR AUDIO CHAT WITH PROVISION OF SOME FIRST AID MEDICINES AVAILABLE WITH TRAINED HEALTH PERSONNEL. ( AS WE HAVE SEEN SOME CLUES IN HINDI FEATURE FILM -3 IDIOTS)
TELE MEDICINE IS FUTURE OF HEALTH PROGRAMMES ALLOVER INDIA OR WORLD. FULLY TRAINED PROFESSIONAL DONT WANT TO REMOTE AREAS AND SKILLED MANPOWER IS NOT ABLE TO SERVE RURAL POPULATION.
LET IT BE A GOVT OF INDIA EFFORT TO LOOK INTO THE MATTER AND MAKE A PILOT PROJECT AND INITIATE FROM A SMALL PART THEN ALLOVER.
HOPEFULLY , HOMOEOPATHY WILL SHOW AND PROVE ITS EFFICACY THROUGH THIS PROGRAMME.
    WITH BEST WISHES

  6. Am happy to know the concern you have for the fraternity and homoeopathy. It would have no effect on govt. even if we collectively submit our views on homoeopathy. This sort of criticism of homoeopathy is not new and we have been protesting but to no use. Homoeopathy has survived since centuries and it would prosper the way it is. the belief is main thing.thanks for inviting my views.

  8. 1) work towards creating district level, state level and National level Homoeopathy practitioners ‘groups’.
    2) Hold yearly conferences, seminars and make government aware of the directives created at these meetings.
    3) Run a very well funded website with strong management team.
4 Check and improve teaching methods and professors at all colleges of Homoeo in India.
5 Participation of financial institutions like banks, NRI funds in doctor students’ education should be assured.
    6. All weekly, monthly magazines, websites should work in tandem with similar goals of keeping Homoeo in forefront and well protected from Pharma villains.

  9. There is a old Indian saying ‘Bhains ke aage been bajaana’ .This ancient saying can be translated as: ‘It is futile to play flute to a buffalo’. The buffalo is a different species and one can’t fault her. Unfortunately it is more difficult to deal with these so called scientific people 🙂

  10. Dear Dr.Anil
these days we as homeopaths have started to find a curable solution for even those disease conditions without evaluating the nature and depth of the disease condition in terms of curable or incurable, more particularly reversible or irreversible. I think need of the hour is that we should be very clear about our role in each and every disease condition because it is not always possible to find a curable solution for each and every one.

So what we can do is try to definre our role in terms of promotive , preventive, curative, palliatve, managmative and how our therapeutic can go along with other pharma-co-therapeutic system.

Moreover there is an acute need of introspection that how our medicines work. Because it is a big question mark with all of us as we fail to explain
    . how it works.
. what path our drugs take to establish its action.
. how long will take to show its desired effects.
. how our body is going to excrete the introduced drug.
these are the basic questions which every pharmacotherapeutic is supposed to answer before claimaiing its efficacy.

    My all sympathy with.

    Yuprs in homoeopathic arena.

Time and again homeopathy is being attacked by UK and USA without going deep into homeopathy. What I feel is they are being horrified by seeing the fast development of homeopathy and people’s acceptance of it cordially. The day is not so far when homeopathy would be the first choice of treatment for many a disease.
I respect your endeavour for organising us to take part in this cold war.

  12. I refer to the “WHO REPORT: SAFETY ISSUES IN THE PREPARATION OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES — this report of W.H.O is a very positive development, and we have to give a serious thought and importance to.
    1. Standardization of our Manufacturing process- Lets have a stand that Potentisation is an manufacturing process only, let’s not talk about high or low dilution,. It would take some more time for non Homoeopath to understand potentisation.
.SAFE PREPARATION / POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARDS. At Government Homoeopathic Pharmacopeia Laboratory Ghaziabad India study has been done on this subject under the guidance of Dr P.N.VERMA, where in safe dispensing potency have been recorded, but there is lack of awareness of the same, yes it could constitute potential safety hazards, and we have to work on this ,subject without further trying to delay –Modify .or commenting –“Homoeopathic remedies are USUALLY given in very small quantity and so such do not have any potential toxic effect.” We need to take up TOXICITY study of our drugs especially Mother tinctures, AND CERTIFY SAFE POTENCY
.The recommendation mentioned should be taken up in right spirit, for further improvement. As this report has removed the stigma “HOMOEOPATHY IS PLACEBO’
We should thank the W.H.O. for this report.
